Jennifer Pagoto
Founder of Purely Mat Pilates, Tuckahoe. Eight Pilates classes a week.
Jennifer has taught mat Pilates since 2016. She was certified by Linda Farrell, NCPT, of LindaFit Pilates New York City, and she has practiced as a licensed occupational therapist since 1996.
She came to Pilates through that work. Jennifer is a pediatric occupational therapist, and most of the children she works with need to build core strength. Therapists call it proximal stability: when the center of the body is steady, control further out improves, and fine motor skills can develop. She trained in Pilates to help those children get stronger, and has taught it ever since.
She had a second reason, and it was her own back.
I have scoliosis. I was diagnosed when I was 12 years old. It happened from a growth spurt that I experienced at that age, and it caused me a lot of pain and discomfort. I've learned over the years that I need to have an extremely strong core in order to prevent myself from being injured and experiencing any pain. Since becoming certified in Pilates and becoming a true passionate practitioner, I have not had any pain or any issues with my back.
That second profession is the thing that makes the class what it is. Occupational therapy is the study of how people actually move through their days: how a joint tolerates load, where compensation creeps in, what a body does when a movement is slightly beyond it. She brings that lens to a Pilates mat, which is why injuries get asked about before class rather than after, and why the modification offered tends to be specific to you rather than generic.
In Jennifer's words
I am passionate about helping my clients reach their optimal level of practice in Pilates. My classes are tailored for the beginner, intermediate and advanced student. Modifications are always provided.
Please discuss any injuries or concerns with me before class. My other profession as an occupational therapist helps me to guide students through an anatomically safe and effective workout.
Props are utilized in every class. They include: hand weights, resistive bands and loops, mini stability balls, yoga blocks, Pilates rings, and foam rollers. Props are an important aspect of these mat Pilates classes. I use these props to deepen the core work.
