Purely Mat Pilates

Mat Pilates classes

Every class is one hour, on a mat, set to upbeat music. It follows the classical Pilates sequence and adds variations, so the shape is familiar but the hour is never quite the same twice.

What happens in a class

You work through the classical mat sequence: footwork and warm-up through the abdominal series, spinal articulation, side-lying work, and finishing with extension and stretch. I layer variations on top depending on who is in the room, which is why regulars do not plateau.

Props are used in every class

Props are not an add-on here. Each session uses some combination of hand weights, resistive bands and loops, mini stability balls, yoga blocks, Pilates rings. The point is to bring the resistance and feedback of the Pilates apparatus, the reformer and the Cadillac, onto a mat, so you get the sensation of the equipment without the equipment.

A mini ball turns a simple quadruped leg lift into something the hamstring has to hold.

Who the class is for

Beginner, intermediate and advanced students take the same class, and modifications are always offered. If you have never done Pilates, this is a reasonable place to start; the most common review comment is that the room is friendly to beginners.

Because I am an occupational therapist as well as a Pilates instructor, I ask about injuries and concerns before class. Please raise them, because it changes what I offer you during the hour.

Not recommended during pregnancy

These classes involve prolonged prone work, intense spinal flexion, and advanced inversions. Those are not recommended during pregnancy, so this particular class is not a prenatal class.

What to bring

Bring your own mat if you have one. There are mats at the studio if you do not. Wear something you can move and invert in. All props are provided.
