Frequently asked questions
How much is a one-hour Pilates class?
A single mat Pilates class at Purely Mat Pilates is $33. Class packs reduce the per-class price: a 5-pack is $155 ($31 each), a 10-pack is $299 ($29.90 each), and a 20-pack is $575 ($28.75 each).
How much is a month of Pilates?
It depends on how often you come. Twice a week for a month is roughly eight classes, which works out to about $239 on a 10-class pack. Once a week is about $120 a month on the same pack.
Is mat Pilates or reformer Pilates better?
Neither is better; they are different tools. Reformer Pilates uses a spring-loaded carriage that assists and resists movement. Mat Pilates uses body weight, gravity and props to produce similar demands. Purely Mat Pilates is mat only, and uses hand weights, resistive bands and loops, mini stability balls, yoga blocks and Pilates rings to bring apparatus-like resistance to the mat.
Can beginners take these classes?
Yes. Beginner, intermediate and advanced students take the same class, and modifications are offered throughout rather than on request. Reviewers most often single out how welcoming the class is for beginners.
What should I bring to a mat Pilates class?
Bring your own mat if you have one, and clothing you can move and invert in. There are mats at the studio if you do not. All props are provided.
Are these classes safe during pregnancy?
No. These classes include prolonged prone work, intense spinal flexion and advanced inversions, none of which are recommended during pregnancy. Purely Mat Pilates does not currently offer a prenatal class.
Is the studio wheelchair accessible?
No. The building has no lift, and the studio is on the second floor with one flight of stairs as the only way up. If stairs are difficult for you, please call me before booking and I will tell you honestly whether the class will work for you.
Where are the classes held?
At Prana Yoga, 62 Main Street, Tuckahoe, New York 10707, under a five-minute walk from the Tuckahoe Metro-North station on the Harlem Line, and a short drive from Bronxville, Eastchester, Crestwood and Yonkers.
How do I book a class?
Booking runs through Prana Yoga’s MindBody scheduler, because I teach inside their studio.
Who teaches the classes?
I am Jennifer Pagoto, both a certified Pilates instructor and a licensed pediatric occupational therapist. I was certified by Linda Farrell, NCPT, of LindaFit Pilates New York City in May 2014, and completed BeyondBarre certification with Robin Florentine in June 2016.
